The Importance Of Being Proud Parents

Our kids want us to be proud of them. They crave that recognition that they’d done something they are so pleased with. It could be standing up to a bully, learning to ride a bike or doing exceptionally well in a test. Sometimes it’s not a big deal to anyone else but them, but if it’s a big deal to them, it should be a big deal to you. It is important to be proud parents.

Why Be Proud Parents?

We are all programmed with a need for praise, acceptance and affirmation. Even more so for children. In the world of growing up, we achieve so many new things that show that we are developing and learning new things. These should be praised. Recognition of these achievements will motivate our children to do more of the same great stuff to get the reaction again. Sometimes it’s hard to see past the hustle and bustle of life but if we get too wrapped up in our phone or with work, we miss out. Our children want to see the pleased look on our face and hear the words that we are proud parents. They have a need that needs fulfilling. We can fill that need by telling our kids we are proud parents when they tell us they’ve done something, but also unexpectedly when we notice them doing something we’re pleased with. You can see this often means even more to them. Happy kids in a happy home.

It Shows Our Love

Not only does our proud moments help motivate our children, it reinforces our love for them. Even if they feel like they fail, we can be proud that they’ve done their best. A cuddle and a positive word in their ear can do so much when they feel like they’ve flopped. Our love is unconditional, we know that. Sometimes it’s hard to see and feels that when tears are rolling down your face though. So reinforcing that by being proud parents, is key. You may have dreamed about them being a footballer after they scored a goal when they were four years old, but we must be happy and proud of their decisions, whatever they choose to do in life. This is how we stay connected and part of their lives. We’ll also be making memories that we can look back on with a smile. As well as giving them confidence to reach for their own dreams.

Walk The Line

Of course, you don’t want come across as embarrassing to your kids or one of those parents who other parents in the playground pull a face about. There seems to be a fine line of showing our pride in public, between being a proud parent and an overbearing one. Pride and pressure are two different things as well. Be the proud parents, not the ones who’s kids feel pressure with the words you tell them. Being proud parents is so important as we help build our children into adults. You’ll see the reaction in the smile and the self-esteem of your child. Be vocal, be present, be encouraging and never be afraid to be proud.
