Helping Your Child Transition From Nursery To Big School

The first day of big school can be extremely daunting. First and foremost, teach them how to be independent. Big school means that they get less one to one attention and are expected to do many things independently by this stage. Using the toilet alone is the most important skill your child should be taught before they reach big school. Parents can play a huge role in this by potty training their child consistently to help them gain confidence to eventually do it alone. Getting dressed and being able to put their own shoes and coat on will be helpful for your child to learn as some schools don’t give help when it comes to small details like this.

Role play with them to get them used to the situations of a classroom. Set up a chair, table and whiteboard and set the scene where you are the teacher and they are the student. Familiarity will allow your child to ease into the new class quicker given that they’ve already experienced it slightly at home.

Some children may be anxious at the thought of a new start so make it exciting for them. The role playing will allow them to have a feel of what’s to come and with parents focusing on all the positives of what is to come, it should lead to a more confident young one.
