School holidays are often a difficult time for working parents, and they certainly don’t hold the same appeal as they do for their child. However, school holidays are important for children for several reasons, as explored below by a prep school in London.

Without a break in the busy school schedule, it can be difficult for children to spend quality time with their parents and extended family, and also engage in free play. What’s more, it’s an opportunity for them to learn things that cannot be taught in a classroom. During the holidays, they might start a new hobby, socialise more with their friends and family and really explore different environments. They may even get to travel abroad and learn about new cultures or languages. It’s a chance for them to rediscover what they love.

School holidays also allow children to relax and de-stress. Constantly striving for certain grades, completing homework each evening, and rushing around to get to school on time, followed by extra-curricular activities in the evenings can be quite overwhelming for young people, and they need time to unwind. We all need a break from the stressors of life from time to time and children have not yet developed the ability to cope with them.

There may be times during the school holidays that your child complains of boredom, but being bored is actually good for them, because it inspires creativity. It encourages them to come up with their own ideas of ways to entertain themselves and fill their time productively and independently. With that said, don’t feel obliged to spend a fortune during the school holidays on days out and other activities with your child.

You’ll probably find that towards the end of the school holidays, your child starts to feel excited about returning to school and motivated to learn.
