The Benefits of Outdoor Learning for Children

This is a paid collaboration.

Outdoor experiences are very beneficial for young people because they are not only great for one’s wellbeing, but they also help with the development of key skills, like teamwork, problem solving and communication. These skills can then be transferred to other areas of their lives, both academic and personal. Parents should encourage outdoor activities at home, giving their youngsters the responsibility of dressing themselves appropriately for the weather and assess any risks. I have teamed up with a prep school in London to explore the benefits of outdoor learning in greater detail.

Allowing children to explore the great outdoors teaches them that learning can happen anywhere, not just in the classroom. It engages their inquisitive nature and encourage them to practise various skills that might not necessarily be taught in normal lessons. As a result, children may become more confident and self-aware.

Furthermore, learning outdoors is healthy. Exercising and experiencing nature are great ways to boost physical and emotional wellbeing, by increasing the production of “feel good” hormones. It provides a welcome break from the four walls of a classroom, while also encouraging a lifelong love of the outdoors. This sense of freedom helps children become more independent and allows them to engage their imaginations and make their own discoveries. As a result, they may start to develop a respectful attitude towards the environment.

There are lots of activities parents can encourage at home to help their children experience the great outdoors. For example, you could build a bird feeder together or plants seeds and watch them grow. You could arrange a scavenger hunt with their friends, to teach them how to engage in healthy competition. Even just a walk through the woods will allow your child to use all of their senses and learn more about the world around them in an interactive, memorable way.
