Top tips for helping your child with maths

In school, there is always one subject that everyone struggles with a little bit. Occasionally, this can be maths. There are many reasons why a child could be struggling with a subject in school, for example, the work may not be understood well enough, it may not be challenging enough or they may have a mental block when it comes to it. As a parent, there are many things that can be done to help your child improve on their math skills. Here are some top tips for helping your child with their maths.

The first step is to be aware of what your child should know. Learning maths can be difficult, so the foundation built beforehand matters a lot. If one maths skill has not sunk in for your child then it will be difficult for them to attain another. This is usually what causes children to start losing their confidence and fall behind in class. Becoming aware of the problem early is key as it can be the reason that their confidence isn’t damaged. Make sure to speak to your child regularly about what they are doing in class and how they’re finding their maths work. Look at their class books and speak to the teacher on a regular basis to ensure you have good grasp of how your child is doing for their age.

Use day-to-day tasks to help your child practise their math skills. There are two ways that you can do this with your child at home. Use a direct method which works on testing the knowledge and identifying strengths and weaknesses or use every day experiences to reinforce and develop math skills. You can use dinner time to do this as your child can practice their numbers through measurements, sizes and shapes.

It is relatively easy to work on math skills with your child at home, so start today!
